Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Incorporated as Mount Vernon Data Systems Inc in June of 1990.
What is your primary product or service?
Database systems, primarily Microsoft SQL Server, including (but not limited to) creation, re-factoring, management, administration, training, and support. We also offer data and database migration services, as when you're considering moving from "ground to cloud", or consolidating database servers (wrangling database server "sprawl"), or porting from one databased application to another, such as customer management or medical records packages.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Our principal, Michelle Poolet, was fortunate enough to get in on the early days of computing while still an undergraduate at University. That fascination never waned; all subsequent work involved computers in one way or another. When the oil & gas exploration company that Michelle was working for back in the 80s pulled up stakes and headed back to Dallas, she opted to cross-train into computing and, as a result, earned a Master’s degree in Computer Information Systems with a specialization in database systems. She’s been going strong ever since.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
- Ability to straddle the two worlds of business and technology, translating business requirements into technological implementations.
- Long years of experience in a variety of industries, involving a wide variety of problem/solution sets.
- Focus on Microsoft SQL Server since the late 80s; we've seen it evolve from a departmental solution to one that can easily handle enterprise operations.
- Data architect expertise: many database administrators are not comfortable working with the data, doing things like developing master data management programs and determining best options for partitioning and archiving data, and mapping the data inter-relationships that are stored inside a database. You'll find that we are different; we love that type of challenge!
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We are a distributed company...or, if you prefer, we live in the cloud. We can grow as needed, depending on the projects at hand. We're always on the lookout for good people, so if you're interested, drop us a line at Info@MountVernonDataSystems.com.
